New Year, New Life

"Yes, yes--this is a fertile land, and we will thrive here. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it--This Land!"
Pilot Wash's dinosaurs on Joss Whedon's "Firefly"

Here it is, 2012, and Life had taken a rather major turn: my husband, Greg, is now retired, three years early. This means we can now (or soon, anyway) move forward with our plans to move to our property near Montello, Nevada and start our ranch, which we call--This Land. We have some fence posts and a lot of sagebrush,

which we hope to convert into a comfortable off-grid cabin and studio, a decent garden and home for some livestock. We intend to start small and grow the ranch as we can pay for it, since we are tired of renting our house from the bank. We have a travel trailer, Serenity,

to provide living space while we build the cabin. A lot of our friends and relatives think we're nuts for wanting to do this. We respect their lifestyle choices and hope they will respect ours. The off-grid, self-sustaining life is not for everyone. Nor is the "cold desert." But we look forward to waking up to this every morning:
and watching our neighbors:

I intend to chronicle our progress on this blog, so if you are interested, please check back often, and follow us in our adventure.

  1. I would join you in Nevada, but I can't get my kaiser there. Rats! I'll be in WAshington State. Maybe I'll drop by for a visit, when I head out to Reno (that's where I was thinking of retiring, but the closest Kaiser is in Sacrimento - yuck). Congrats on your retirement, Greg. I won't be that far behind you. Regards to you both.

  2. Stop on by (making sure, of course, that we're there--we have a house to try to sell here, so we won't be heading that way until March or thereabouts), we'd love to have you visit! And congrats on your pending retirement. I suspect you'll love Washington State.

  3. Sorry you won't be closer, but this sounds like a wonderful adventure! What is the closest town/source of power? I'll have to google it on GoogleEarth...keep me posted, I'll zoom around in cyberspace and visit you.
What about Sarah & co.? Clara and Jesse are getting married June 15 near Boston and will be sending them a "save the date" notice very soon. We could arrange a place for them to stay if needed.
Have fun & keep us posted.

  4. Hi, Ruth! I agree, it would be nice if we were closer. The nearest town is Montello, population about 80. The place we'll do routine shopping is West Wendover, and for serious shopping we'll go to Salt Lake City or Twin Falls, Idaho. Tommy will be a big brother around the end of August, and the kids are looking at moving to Mesa, AZ, where houses are cheap and to be near Eric's family for a change. I'll send Sarah the date for Clara and Jesse. Keep checking the blog, and I'll fill in the gaps privately, as well.

  5. Ruth, I forgot to answer your question about power. The nearest power lines are about a mile away, and would cost far too much to connect to, so we're planning to go totally off-grid, with solar, wind and a backup generator for those times when there's no sun or wind.

  6. Love the "off the grid" plan! If was 10 years younger I'd be planning something similar ...but maybe in a slightly warmer spot. I very excited for you and look forward to following the adventure here. Hugs - Toby
